Samuel Merritt died from wounds on 2nd December, 1914, probably while a prisoner of war but as yet there is no information as to when and where he was wounded or captured. The 2nd battalion of the Grenadier Guards was, at that time, part of 20 Brigade, 7th Division that had been on the Western Front since October, 1914.
